Pogue has written a blog and in that blog he has offered many helpful hints and information. Among those tips, he offered advice on eliminating the shutter lag, creating a "blurred" background effect, and advice on using the flash outdoors (during the daytime) to eluminate the face of your subject without effecting the exposure of the background. In addition to these extremely helpful tips, he also offered the insight of using everyday items to help with your photography - such as, using a lampshade socket as a tripod and advice on when the perfect time is to take pictures.
I found all of this information very useful and I think I will use some of his ideas in the future when taking pictures. I think the advice that he had to offer was very interesting as well as insightful. I also intend to read his blog in the future, to find out more helpful advice that Pogue has to offer.

The Return of Coal
There are eight pictures in a series that are describing why coal should be used rather than oil as a heating source, and how coal is making a come back. The title of the series is called, “The Return of Coal.” Of the eight pictures shown in the series, there were only a few that I believed to be semi-affective or decent pictures.
Of them, I believed that the first picture was a really good one, because of the composition of the picture. It was of a building that had a painted slogan on two of the walls and the photograph was taken from an angle so that you could see both of the walls. The slogans that were written on the walls of the buildings were, “Everybody’s goal is mine more coal,” and “Did you produce a car more today?” This was intended to remind everyone of the importance of coal.
Another picture that was really effective, was the picture of the man pouring coal into his furnace, as his wife and child were in the background playing. I thought this kind of brought the picture close-to-home, and made it seem like a part of everyday life.
I was convinced of the argument to bring back coal after watching this photo-essay because of the photos and descriptions that were presented.

Sutton Panoramic Camera, c 1861

For many years now, the camera has been a very important piece of technology, and is constantly being updated. Joseph Nicéphore Niépce took the first photograph in the year 1814. He achieved this by coating a pewter plate with bitumen and exposing the plate to light. The bitumen hardened where it was struck by light, and the unhardened areas dissolved away. Since then, the camera has been updated many size. The updates the camera has received include, a smaller size and a lot more features. The features that were included were to “modernize,” the camera, so to speak.
The Sutton panoramic camera, although not the first camera invented, was the camera that was used in 1861, and was the camera that was used to photograph Abraham Lincoln. The year 1861 was the year that the first known permanent color photograph was taken. That color photograph was taken by a man James Clerk Maxwell, who had a lot of scientific background and worked a lot with color and photograph. The Panoramic cameras were held within a wooden casing, which incorporated the Sutton lens, including the curved photographic plates, plate holder, and sensitizing bath. All of this was made by T Ross, in London. During the late 1850s, a man named Thomas Sutton developed the world’s first spherical photographic lens. This lens, called the “Sutton Lens,” allowed panoramic pictures to be taken without the careful rotation of a camera on its tripod. This new wide angle lens made it possible to create panoramic images of non-static objects and was manufactured by Thomas Ross from 1861 until 1864, in London.
The photographs featured above my essay, are examples of photographs that were taken in 1861 using the Sutton Panoramic Camera. Those photographs are (starting from the left) of a woman, Abraham Lincoln during his presidency and a civil war soldier. I think that because of the way the pictures are taken, and because of the age of the photographs, it makes them quite interesting.

Zimbabwe Photograph
Why is this an effective photograph? (Taken in Zimbabwe)
This a very effective picture because it shows grave sites and a man digging grave sites. All of the grave sites (and there are hundreds visible), are side by side. That makes it very dramatic. Also, the man that is digging the grave sites isn’t in the center of the photograph, he is off to the right hand side, I think that makes it more interesting than if he was right smack in the middle of the picture. Also, the line of trees that are in the background, make the picture beautiful. The bright blue color of the sky and the line of the horizon add contrast to the photograph. This photograph is a very nice photograph because it has depth. The man digging the graves is in the front of the picture, and there are trees in the distance. You can tell that there is depth because the trees are smaller than the man.Friday, October 3, 2008
How the Internet is used

People utilize the Internet for a variety of reasons. The Internet is a very important resource in the world today. I use the Internet for quite a few reasons. One of the most important reasons I use the Internet, is to keep in contact with my friends and family. I can do that by e-mailing them, or using “face book” and “my space.” Another reason that I use the Internet is to check the news and the weather. I like to know what’s going on in the world around me, and it’s much easier to use the Internet to learn, than to go out and buy a newspaper. I also like to check the weather so I can know what to wear. One of my very favorite things to do on the Internet is to go shopping. Its much easier than going out to a store, because I can just stay at home and browse. Lastly, I use the Internet as an important resource for my schoolwork. All of my homework is posted on the Internet, and I can use the Internet to help me do my homework.
The Internet is a very important thing to me, as well as many other people. My father uses the Internet for a lot of different reasons than I do. He is a Real Estate broker, so he uses the Internet to check MLS listings and update his website. Although, he is like me that he uses the Internet to keep in contact with people via e-mail. Another important reason that my father uses the Internet is to check his stocks.
My father and I are two different people and we use the Internet for different reasons, but we both use the Internet to check our e-mails and communicate with others. Also, the Internet helps me with school and helps my father with his job. The Internet is an excellent resource for all people. Over time, the Internet has changed, and it will continue to change in the future. The Internet is an excellent resource for personal use and for business use.

Review of 'Hurricaine Ike' and 'West Side Story' Pictures
Picture #1: “Hurricane Ike”
The purpose of this picture is to show the damage and the flooding that hurricane ike has caused. The composition of this picture is unique and does a very nice job showing the damage that was caused. The picture is showing a street and how it is almost flooded up to people’s waists. Depth was shown in this photography, by the stop sign in the background and the stop sign that’s in front. The stop sign that’s in the background is a lot smaller than the one in front, so you can tell by looking at this picture that it’s further away. Depth is also shown by the trees and the streetlights.
Picture #2 “West Side Story”
This picture is showing two people holding hands and running in the street. The woman is further in front than the man, and it gives the picture depth and makes it look 3-dimensional. Depth in this picture is shown by the buildings and the details of the buildings getting smaller as the picture goes further back. Depth can also be found by the size of the woman’s hand that’s in front, and the man’s hand that’s in back.
